Rediff.com28 Jul 2022In an unprecedented action, Indian aviation regulator DGCA has directed low-cost airline Spicejet to operate only 50 per cent of its flights for eight weeks. This follows an unusually high number of incidents involving the airline, raising safety concerns. The curtailment of capacity is unlikely to have any commercial impact on the airline owned by entrepreneur Ajay Singh. SpiceJet already operates less than 50 per cent of the flights it had filed for the summer schedule.
UDAN international plan under cloud as AirAsia India fails to get permit
Rediff.com26 Jul 2022Tata group-owned AirAsia India's inability to get approval for international flights is hurting UDAN, the Indian government's regional air connectivity project that also aims to link cities in Northeast India and Odisha to places abroad. Sources said the civil aviation ministry is waiting for the low-cost airline to come under the full ownership of Tata Sons and become part of Air India, the former state-owned carrier now owned by the private conglomerate, before allowing it to operate international flights. Tata owns 84 per cent stake in AirAsia India and it is understood that the group will complete the process of buying rest of the stake by July's end.

Airspace coordination in India helps airlines save big
Rediff.com6 May 2022Coordination between defence and civilian authorities has freed up airspace for commercial airlines in India, resulting in routes becoming shorter and costs coming down, apart from mitigating pollution. "Due to various restrictions of the military, only about 58 per cent of the Indian airspace was being utilised. It is close to 70 per cent now," said an official of the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Officials of the AAI said to date 119 routes had been shortened. Sources said since December 2020 the cumulative savings of airlines had been close to Rs 200 crore while there was a reduction in emission of around 45,000 tonnes of carbon.
Delhi airport displaced Dubai as world's second busiest in March
Rediff.com3 May 2022Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, India's largest, emerged as the second busiest airport in the world in March, displacing Dubai Airport and trailing only Atlanta in the pecking order, according to OAG, a global travel data provider. Its flight to the second position was the result of a strong recovery in the domestic aviation market. The government's decision to reopen international flights last month also helped increase traffic flow.
US aviation watchdog likely to maintain highest safety rating for India

US aviation watchdog Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has completed the audit of India's aviation regulator DGCA.
